Etosha National Park: A Week in Africa’s Wild Heart
Etosha National Park was established as a game reserve in 1907 and covers an area of 22 270 square kilometres. It was named after the Etosha Pan which is located in the centre of the park. The salt pan is massive in size, and is an impressive, extremely bright sight. It is the biggest salt pan in Africa. Etosha means Great White Place in the Oshivambo language. During the summer rainy season, October to April, the pan fills with water and attracts many water birds, including large flocks of flamingos. It becomes very dry during the winter months when there is no rainfall at all. There are a lot of waterholes…

Tuli: Into the Botswana Wilderness
Together with three other couples, my husband Steve and I set off for Tuli Wilderness in the Northern Tuli Block in Botswana in March. Tuli is situated in the triangle of eastern Botswana that is along the Limpopo River, which is the border between South Africa and Botswana, and Zimbabwe. We stayed in two camps in Tuli Wilderness, Serolo camp which is close to the Limpopo River, and Mohave camp which is further inland from the river. Both camps offered comfortable accommodation in chalets or tents with ensuite bathrooms. All meals were included. Serolo camp We arrived at Serolo camp first, in time for a superb lunch prepared in a…

LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDID THING
What is love? The Oxford English Dictionary describes it as an intense feeling of deep affection for someone. KRUGER NATIONAL PARK
The Kruger National Park is situated in the Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces of South Africa. It is truly the flagship national park of South Africa. Its sheer size, more than 2 million hectares, plus its unrivalled diversity of game and ecozones, from open savanna to bushveld to sandveld, make it a sought-after destination for South Africans and overseas visitors alike. HISTORY The Kruger National Park was established in 1898 through the efforts of Paul Kruger, president of the Transvaal, who was concerned about the dwindling game in the Lowveld area, mostly due to poaching. It was called the Sabie Game Reserve at the time. In July 1902 James Stevenson Hamilton…

We fake being okay- We do not fake depression
A growing number of people worldwide are suffering from depression and anxiety. The past couple of years have certainly brought enough challenges. Covid caused many people to suffer from the illness itself, lose their jobs and lose family members to the dreaded virus. There have also been numerous war zones like Ukraine and the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. In South Africa too, we have had our own hardships. From drought to devastating floods in the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, to rioting in KwaZulu-Natal and of course, the ever-present load shedding and high unemployment. It is no wonder people are struggling to cope. The psychologist can provide useful tools. Depression is described as…

Cape Agulhas
Photographer Kim Wimberley travelled to the southernmost point in Africa, Cape Agulhas, in the southern Cape, in early Spring. My husband Steve and I live in Durban, on the sunny east coast. We love travelling around our beautiful country, enjoying its lovely landscapes, mountainous areas, desert-like areas such as the Karoo, the sandy beaches and the craggy coastlines. Recently, we travelled to Agulhas National Park, which is at the southernmost tip of Africa. This is where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. It is a beautiful and tranquil place to spend a few days. The stylish cottages offer breathtaking sea views and radiant sunsets. It is soothing to fall asleep…
